Here’s a look at what sorts of activities fall in each quadrant. Not urgent and not important: These activities hold little if any value and should be eliminated as much as possible. They are generally distractions that may result from the poor planning of others. Minimize, delegate, or eliminate them because they don’t contribute to your output. Urgent but not important: These tasks are urgent but not important.Strive to spend most of your time in this quadrant. Important but not urgent: These items are important but don’t require immediate action and should involve long-term development strategizing. ![]() Important and urgent: These tasks have important deadlines with high urgency-complete them right away. Here’s a closer look at each of these quadrants: Eisenhower Matrix (Click on image to modify online) He offers the following time management matrix, known as the Eisenhower matrix, as an organizational tool for prioritizing tasks based on these ideas of importance and urgency. To avoid this pitfall, use one of the time management tips for work found in Stephen Covey’s book First Things First. We tend to let the urgent dominate when we should really focus on activities that support our business goals. Important responsibilities support the achievement of your goals, whereas urgent responsibilities require immediate attention and are associated with the achievement of someone else’s goals. Then identify the three or four most important tasks and do those first-that way, you make sure you finish the essentials.Įvaluate your to-do list and make sure you organized it based on the importance of a task rather than its urgency. Start by eliminating tasks that you shouldn’t be performing in the first place. Daily Schedule (Click on image to modify online)Īs you organize your to-do list, prioritization is key for successful time management at work. Create a daily schedule-and stick with it. If there is a significant difference, take that into account as you plan out your schedule going forward so you can more accurately budget your time and avoid bottlenecks and missed deadlines. We often overestimate how quickly can accomplish things. At the end of your audit, compare how much time certain tasks or projects took you to complete versus how long you expected them to take. Pro Tip: Assess how realistically you estimate your time. ![]() This exercise can also help you determine the time of day when you are most productive-that way, you know when to work on your projects requiring the most focus and creativity. This is indeed a very familiar type of action film as reflected by its fairly simple plot and broad characterization, but it is a well-made film with some style and skills, and it comes to me as something more engaging than many average blockbuster action films. If $10 is the full price of admission, FALCON RISING is worth $7ĭon’t miss our exclusive interview with Michael Jai White HERE!įalcon Rising arrives in theaters September 5th (Available on iTunes, DirecTV, and OnDemand Sept.“Falcon Rising” is as much as you can expect from a B-action flick featuring a lonely tough guy hero and a bunch of bad guys guaranteed to get his vengeful wrath in the end. So, if you like action films and you want to see droves of bad guys get the beatdown they so desperately deserve, then give this movie a try. This film knows what it is, knows what you want, and it isn’t bashful about giving you exactly that with no filler or attempts at shaking up the cinematic world. Is FALCON RISING going to win any Oscars? No. My hat is off to director Barbarash for keeping the film exciting without every overdoing it with quick cut edits. Every fight was as brutal as it was entertaining. Each shot counted, which brought a real life feel to the movie. There were no indiscriminate sprays of bullets, no machine guns going clacka-clacka-clacka for minutes on end. At times I was reminded of EQUILBRIUM’s gun-kata style, with punches followed by well placed shots, followed by kicks and then another shot. It’s amazing to see a guy so covered in muscle leap and spin as quickly as he does.īut what I really enjoyed was how well the gunplay was integrated into the fights. White is a powerhouse, his size matched only by his speed. The story is simple, the acting proficient, and the locations exotic, all of which pleases my inner 80s child, but the action…oh the action is what you really came for, and it does not disappoint. And when his fists start flying, neither do they.įALCON RISING is a mixture of old and new action styles. When he eventually discovers who the true forces are behind his sister’s attack, it’s an enemy he never saw coming. Knowing those bastards have to pay, he hops a plane and, with the help of his old military friend Manny (Neal McDonough), begins the search. White plays John “Falcon” Chapman, a former soldier and PTSD sufferer whose sister is badly beaten by unknown evildoers in the favelas of Sao Paolo, Brazil. So, you can imagine how please I was to watch FALCON RISING, a straight-up action movie staring Michael Jai White ( SPAWN, BLACK DYNAMITE) and directed by Ernie Barbarash ( 6 BULLETS, HARDWIRED). Sure, the movies looked good, but often I wished for the occasional return to yesteryear, when I could sit back and watch a good guy kill a bad guy in a flurry of punches and hollow point ammo. And the action got even more complicated, with every fight needing wirework, and a million cameras took it in from every angle imaginable, all of which we had to see in a rapid volley of quick cuts. Suddenly our heroes were troubled and our villains were shades of gray. ![]() Then the 90s came, followed by the 00s, and things got complicated. Life was simple back then, straightforward. Their motives didn’t need to be convoluted, the villains didn’t require an ounce of sympathetic humanity, and justice was dealt at the end of a gun, a roundhouse kick, or hopefully both. All they needed to justify killing dozens – if not hundreds – of faceless bad guys was righteous revenge. Back in the 80s, cinematic action heroes had it easy. ![]() ![]() ![]() To be just okay is not bad, but it is fair to say that it’s not really good either. Lara Croft: Tomb Raider was bad, but it was also silly and absurd and cheesy and weird. Lara Croft: Tomb Raider definitely has lower critical ratings than Tomb Raider does, but the 2001 film seems to be much more memorable than the reboot was. ![]() However, one also has to question if it is the best film iteration of the Lara Croft video games that exists. Space Jam: A New Legacy is a great example of this phenomenon.Īnd so, with this in mind, one could make the argument that Tomb Raider is a pleasant surprise because by no means is it as bad as the majority of video game movies tend to be. A movie based on something that already has a following virtually guarantees that the people who like that thing will go and see that movie iteration of it, even if they are quite certain that it’s not going to be good. It is easy to forget that the film industry above all else is a business, and it is often not as important to make a good movie as it is to make a movie that is going to make money. ![]() This is because more than any other genre of film, video game movies seem to be made largely as a result of a greater chance that they will return a profit. It is difficult to imagine someone like Wes Anderson or David Lynch directing a movie based on a video game. It is fair to say that each one of these issues could be rectified by the presence of individuals who care deeply about filmmaking as an art form, but it feels rare that it is the auteurs working on a video game movie. The production of the film is very generic, with nothing particularly interesting about its writing, cinematography, or editing, all of which make it a very lackluster viewing experience. Tomb Raider, spanning two-hours, chooses to focus on action sequences as opposed to character-building moments that the film could have greatly benefited from. Underdeveloped characters are an issue that occurs often in video game movies because a video game can extend into its own world for so much longer than a film can. ![]() The villain of the film similarly is not particularly well developed with very unclear motives, which arguably, is the worst thing that a movie villain can have. However, the effect that her missing father has had on her, and her relationship with her father in the first place are both illustrated poorly through flashbacks and voiceovers that do little to tell the audience of their relationship other than the very bare minimum required to drive the plot forward. It often seems as though it is obscenely easy to kill anyone but the protagonist in an action movie. Her athleticism is portrayed believably, or at least, as believably as the athletic prowess of any action movie hero can be, surviving events that would kill most humans. All the audience really knows about her is that she is highly athletic, and that her father went missing when she was a child. The most obvious issue is that Alicia Vikander’s Lara Croft is underdeveloped as a character. RELATED: Lovecraft Country Creator To Direct Tomb Raider Sequel And it is forgettable for a variety of reasons that make the majority of video game movies either mediocre or just objectively bad. It is entertaining and action-packed, and it is visually truthful to the video game it is based on, but the movie is very forgettable. To be fair, Tomb Raider is not necessarily a terrible film. However, Uthaug’s Tomb Raider is still only mediocre at best. Time and time again, fans have complained that various video game movies are nothing like the games that they are based on, but no one can claim that about this film. Tomb Raider (2018) very closely follows the plot of the 2013 video game of the same name, which itself was intended as a reboot of the Lara Croft video game series. The film made $274 million worldwide, which interestingly, is the same amount that the Angelina Jolie film made when it came out. Roar Uthaug’s Tomb Raider starring Alicia Vikander came out in 2018, intended as a reboot of the 2001 film, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, starring Angelina Jolie. ![]() |
